Executive Director Message – Disability Pride

We’re here today to celebrate Disability Pride a time to honor the strength, innovation, and unshakable spirit of the disability community. And let’s be clear: this is not just a celebration. It’s a recognition of leadership. Of impact. Of pride.

People with disabilities have been on the front lines of the fight for independence long before mainstream society caught up. The reason you can speak to your phone and have it write your text? That came from the disability community. Voice activation, assistive tech, adaptive tools and so much more didn’t start as conveniences. They were necessities, born from ingenuity and persistence, pushed forward by people with disabilities.

I remember, over 30 years ago, being at an Easter Seals computer lab where people could use speech activation. And back then? It was clunky. Groundbreaking, yes but frustrating to use. Many of you here probably wouldn’t have had the patience or persistence to stick with it. But people with disabilities did. And thanks to their perseverance and the innovation it inspired we now have some truly incredible tools.

What they were doing wasn’t just about access. It was about freedom. About dignity. And that same energy has fueled decades of advancement that we all benefit from now especially as we age.

Today, many seniors use tools that were first pioneered by and for people with disabilities because of the Independent Living Movement. That’s why the State of California and even the federal government is beginning to align accessibility efforts across both groups. But let’s also acknowledge the growing pains.

Let’s be real young disabled people, while respectful, often want to forge their own paths. And older generations, with all their wisdom and life experience, can sometimes be slow to embrace new ideas. That tension? It’s natural. It’s been happening at least since Socrates’ time.

But here’s the truth: the disability community is leading the charge in community living. They are the reason so many of us can now imagine aging with independence and dignity. They’re showing us what’s possible not by asking permission, but by building the future themselves.

So let’s make a distinction. Senior living and disability-led independent living are different but deeply connected. One group is creating the runway. The other is landing on it softer, safer, and more empowered.

That’s the heart of Disability Pride. Not just surviving but innovating, adapting, and clearing the path for others. Focusing on what can be done, not what can’t.

To the disability community: your pride is justified. Your impact is undeniable. Your leadership is something we should all honor not just this month, but every day.
