The Summer Season of outreach has kicked off something fierce. We have been busy meeting with the community, sharing resources and developing new and lasting relationships with many of the nonprofit organizations in the area.
Some of the key events we are participating in this summer include:
Accessibility Awareness Day at Cal Poly Humboldt, hosted by Cal Poly Humboldt
Accessibility Day at College of the Redwoods, co-hosted by TCIL and CR
Unity Day at St. Vincent de Paul in partnership with UpLift Eureka every month on the last Wednesday.
Child Abuse Prevention RoundTable hosted by the CAPCC of Humboldt County
Rooted & Wellness Health Summit hosted by Black Humboldt
Hope Center BBQ and Resource Fair hosted by the Jefferson Community Center
Supporting Healthy Aging Conference hosted by Humboldt Senior Resource Center
Lewiston Peddlers Faire
Del Norte Chamber Mixer hosted by our Del Norte office
And so much more.
With each outreach season we learn new ways to provide support to the rural disabled community. Our outreach efforts have allowed us to expand our programs, become partners with several other organizations, and build on those budding relationships within the nonprofit sector so that we are informed, educated, and knowledgeable about what resources are available to the community we serve.
This summer season we also saw many changes taking place within our community and California at large. Through our efforts to stay informed about voters rights and how we can support the disabled community in their voting rights we have been staying informed of the topics that impact the disabled community, and the nonprofits around the world. We are learning how we can support our community through education and advocacy in a time when we need it the most.
We continue to provide valuable services and opportunities within the Tri-County area and are looking forward to our expansion into Trinity County. We started this expansion with some outreach at the Lewistons Peddlers Faire and a collaboration with PG&E, RTAG, and CCRP to help the rural community be more informed, prepared, and supported during rural climate changes.
Along with these great collaborative opportunities we continue to support CRTP in their efforts to make Eureka safe for pedestrians and Bicyclists when traveling through Eureka, McKinleyville, and Arcata. By collaborating with CRTP on safer streets within the Eureka area we have signed many petitions for the safety corridor and the 4th and 5th street sections to become more safe. We have heard of a new light installation that will make that area more safe for pedestrians and bikers.
This year we joined Humboldt Trails Council as part of their advocacy team and as a Board Member with the sole purpose of giving the disability community a voice in the new trial construction. Because of our ongoing efforts to provide accessibility recommendations and audits we have been instrumental in helping the trails become safer for those with disabilities, provide valuable information for CalTrans, and even make major improvements in the Cal Poly Humboldt campus’ accessibility. Each year we strive to improve upon the accessibility of our community. This year we saw some major improvements and have taken many tiny steps towards a more accessible Humboldt region.
