Anisa Escobedo reappointed to California State Independent Living Council (SILC)

California Governor Galvin Newsom’s office announced on Wednesday, October 9, 2024 that Anisa Escobedo, of Eureka, has been reappointed to the California State Independent Living Council (SILC), where she has served since March, 2023. Escobedo was elected as the Council Vice Chair for California SILC in October. Escobedo has been the Owner and Designer of Escobedo Design since 2016. She has held several roles at Tri-County Independent Living (TCIL) between 2019 and 2024, including Systems Change & Special Projects Coordinator, and Advocacy & Outreach Specialist.

Escobedo was Executive Director of Arcata Chamber of Commerce in 2022. Escobedo serves on the California Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities and Escobedo is a member of Kiwanis Club of Arcata.

  • The SILC is an 18-member council, appointed by the Governor, to represent persons with disabilities throughout the state and charged with:
  • Determining the allocation of federal funds for independent living;
  • Advising the Governor and Legislature about issues impacting persons with disabilities in California;
  • Creating projects and moving forward ideas that will enhance the ability of people with disabilities to live independently;
  • Assuring compliance with applicable state and federal laws governing independent living.

All council members serve three year terms as volunteers. In July 1996, Governor Pete Wilson signed an executive order which established the SILC as an independent state agency.

TCIL Executive Director Eddie A. Morgan, MPA stated
We are very pleased with this appointment by the Governor as Anisa is a valued member of the North Coast community and has years of serving the disability community in multiple capacities. We greatly appreciate the efforts of those in Sacramento who have given her the voice and presence to represent people with disabilities in rural Northern California.
